There are many different ways to code a key and many different types of keys that require the know how, and understanding of this technique. There are, however, two types of codes, direct and indirect.

Many lock manufacturers add a stamp to their keys and locks that lets a locksmith know how to go about making a key from a blank. Once the code is obtained the key can be made with the coding machine or by hand with a file or other tools, but the key coding machine is much faster.
